Dissolved Acetylene
Acetylene is a gaseous hydro- carbon with characteristics that make it highly suitable for technical applications. It is unstable in pure form and thus is usually handled as a solution. Acetylene gas has many uses including cutting, flame heating, flame gouging, gas welding, flame straightening and brazing.
Acetylene is the chemical compound with the formula C2H2. It is an unsaturated hydrocarbon and the simplest alkyne. An acetylene molecule is composed of two carbon atoms and two hydrogen atoms. The two carbon atoms are held together by what is known as a triple carbon bond having CH bond angle of 180 deg. This bond is useful in that it stores substantial energy that can be released as heat during combustion. However, the triple carbon bond is unstable, making acetylene gas very sensitive to conditions such as excess pressure, excess temperature, static electricity, or mechanical shock.
Motukea Gas locally produces dissolve acetylene in Papua New Guinea with the aid of carbide and acetone.
Acetylene cylinders filled with a porous mass packing material that is saturated with acetone in which the acetylene is dissolved, to prevent explosive decomposition.
Properties
The low auto-ignition temperature of acetylene means that minimal energy is required to ignite acetylene in air or oxygen.
Highly reactive, when acetylene is dissolved in acetone and contained within a porous mass inside the cylinder.
Common Application
Cutting, Brazing and Heating
Thermal spraying of various metals and ceramics. The material to be sprayed is fed through the flame.
Flame cleaning – a wide oxyacetylene flame is held very close to a steel surface to be cleaned
Flame hardening – an oxyacetylene flame can be used where the hardened surface of carbon steel components is either in-situ as a remedial process or on components too large to fit in a furnace
